New Category... How exciting !

So I kind of let you guys on with a little hype about this post, I hope you enjoy it. For the past month I have been quite successful in selling in a new to me category...."clothing." More specifically pre-owned clothing. Truth is I love to sell pottery, collectibles and vintage but really there was some kind of economic stand still and my items in those categories were not moving. A girl got eat so I had to make moves, get things selling again.

I sat and thought for a long time (gosh it was a very long time). Then I opened up Terapeak and researched some numbers. It then became apparent what I always kind of knew, people can starve for a little while but they will never go nude!

I have a source of really cheap pre-owned clothing, I call it my favorite store. Its the local thrift and I volunteer there on Thursdays, well most Thursdays. Anyhow at this store smaller sizes don't generally sell well. The thrift store has piles of clothing size x small and small. Following the Terapeak numbers I decided to cherry pick all the pricy brands in these sizes. I listed the clothing way low using eBay actions and I have to report I have been doing very well. On average my profit per piece is $8 dollars, so I wont get rich fast but I will keep at it.

Listing clothing is fairly easy. Photographs are kind of simple with not too much to fuss about. Shipping is a breeze... tyvek envelopes y'all!

So try it I highly recommend it and you might like it....

Tuesday Book Sale wrap -up

Not bad for a vacation week; sold five books for a total $59.33 Profit. Most of these books came from my local auction. I explained before how I buy boxes of books there that no one seems to want. These "boxed lots" cost me $1 for about 5 plus books. The great thing is most of these books are 20+ years old, so there is always that potential out of print find!

Sorry about no photos today. Im doing summer camp and time is tight. Remember...
If you list it they will buy it!

Whoa! Been Gone but... Im Back!

cleencolla ebay
Sorry to all my followers and my non-committal readers.  i have had to take sometime off for my own peace of mind.  Good news is at one point I tipped the scale of listings in eBay and broke my personal record.  To some 200 items might not seem like much.  Take in to consideration that they are all "one-of"  and you realize... "that's a lot of writing my friends."

So now I am back and I have some great stories in the works.  Books have sold,  a few items have moved on etsy.  And my new category in eBay has taken off.  So stay posted, come back often and taken in your fill.  Properly Vintaged is still strong!

Flip Of the Week: Scandinavian Glass Pitcher

RARE IITTALA GLASS FINLAND ULTIMA THULE 50 0Z PITCHER TAPIO WIRKKALA
I had had this pitcher for a while, listed on etsy on the high side because I knew it was a sure sell.  It is quite beautiful, yet alas I have little kids.   So as much as my heart wanted to keep this piece, the practical me said, "NO!"
I found this  IITTALA THULE 50 0Z PITCHER at my fav thrift store.  I love glass pitchers.  I think it has a lot to do with growing up having had only plastic ones.  When I saw it I was intrigued by how it caught the light.  Then I picked it up and felt how light and delicate it was, I was sold.  I knew nothing of the brand or the design,  but I have been told I developed "the eye for quality."   I will now accept the compliment and give myself credit for having gained knowledge of well made items, countless hours reading and attending the auction has paid off.  The pitcher I paid $2 for and it sold for $76 shipping not included.  A great flip for me.

What not to Sell: Tony the Tiger

http://www.ebay.com/itm/200770223415?ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1559.l2649#ht_1816wt_1185
Who knew Tony was not so great anymore?  I dont know if its the Kelloggs brand or because the orignal voice has gone silent.  But Tony is not pullig the big bucks as a collectors item.  Sure the occassional rare item still gets much deserved attention but most of his items are now "mundane" and not worth the effort as was the case with my 12” Kellogg Tony The Tiger Plush Team Tony Hockey Player 2004 plus key chain Lot.  I actually lost money on this sale.
The only saving grace here, there is two less items in my storage room.  Hey don't laugh, around here storage is at a premium and i just gained about eight cubic inches back... thats me... WINNING!

Totaled I paid about $5.00 for all five books,  and combined they netted me $40.72.  Not too bad for a little time and money invested.  Books are the easiest thing to list and ship.  I dont have to worry they wont fit the buyer or that they will break in the mail.  Dollar for dollar is the less stressful item to sell, Do you agree?

Flip of the Week: BURBERRY RAIN COAT

VTG BURBERRY RAIN COAT WOOL LINER Size 40 REG cleencolla properly vintaged
Like everyone else my sales have been hurting.  Im doing OK selling books... but ebay is killing me.  So my big flip this week was this VTG BURBERRY RAIN COAT WOOL LINER Size 40 REG.  It sold For $28.05 w/shipping.  I had bought the entire Burberry rain coat at auction for $5.  Nobody at the auction would touch it because it had some stains, but I'm not afraid to do laundry.   I took on the stains, Guess who won?  They did!

Luckily my very smart (and beautiful) sister told me I should sell the liner separate because the coat part still had light stains that devalued it.  So a few months ago the jacket sold for close to $20 and now with the sale of the liner at $28  I am feeling OK with the fact that I met a stain I could not remove.  So there is some "happy" to go along with the low sales.

May the good Lord increase Yer Sales 10 fold by weeks end Lads and Lassies!

What Not to Sell: ANNE GEDDES

ANNE GEDDES BABY BUNNY in EASTER EGG properly vintage estate cleencolla
To be sure Anne Geddes was a genious.  Her photos of babies were clearly spectacular and Adorable with a capital "A"  Yet sadly the market for her cutesy creations is dead.  Maybe people have gotten tired of looking at beautiful babies,  maybe the economy is preventing them from even thinking about about babies.  I know its given me pause!
Anne Geddes anything used to be big money on ebay and a sure sell.  I had this
BABY BUNNY in EASTER EGG  listed for over 3 months.  It finally sold because I practically gave it away.
So there you have it folks... cute babies are not for selling.

What not to Sell: Huge Fragile Items

I bought this Corning Ware  dutch oven because Blue Corn Flower is my  mother-in-laws pattern.  She loves Corning wear, swears by it and god bless her she uses it to cook EVERYDAY!   Yes! she cooks everyday!  Are ya feeling the shame with me?  No, not yet?  Well let me add that my MIL is 82 years old this year.  The shame! Its burning my eyes!  Here this will make us feel better... Everyday cooking  places a lot of wear and tear on these beautiful dishes, that's why we don't cook everyday, Right?
Being the world's most awesome-est daughter in law I have been slowly replacing her "well-loved" pieces with ones from thrift.  But she didn't need the dutch oven,  said it was too big.  Then suggested I keep it and use it myself, ummm... "No, thanks!"  I listed that sucker faster than you can sell an original Andy Warhol on a $100 BIN eBay auction.  The dish did sell,  but the thing was huge and such an issue to pack.  There was too many pieces of foam, miles and miles of bubblewrap and a ton of newspaper.  And still it didnt make it.   Apparently the package met some basketball playing US Postal Service employees, and the dutch oven was done for.   Profit on Corning Ware dutch oven  $0

There you have it... Dont sell huge, fragile items!

Im in Love... with Pottery

That was hard to say,  I  find it hard to make the "love" statement.  Now that it is said I kind of feel better, like I have reassured myself.  So lets delve a little deeper into this love affair of mine.  Well, it began at the auction and Ladies and Gentlemen it was love at first sight if not the other.  Never in my life had i been enthralled with dinnerware and other fine ceramic.  Some might say I am too generous with my love but i give it willingly to; Lenox, Ironstone, Fiesta, Dansk, and all the pieces from Mottanedeh.  I know masses swooned over Mid Century Modern frankly,  I understand the appeal, but modern is just not me.  I like tried and true.  I love it classic, because time tested functionality serves to gain character.  Appealing indeed.

I lust after pottery, I buy it and flip it FAST!  Is like a drug to me,  to have it for a little while all to myself and then send it to its intended "home" repeating the cycle as often as i can.  Pray for me.

The pot in the picture is a Vintage MELITTA GERMANY Coffee Pot,  I knew when I saw it I had to have it.  Used it a couple of times and sold it this week for $15.  Cheap I know, but such is love.

Tuesday Book Sale Wrap-up

Because Tuesdays are busy for me,  I have decided to save all my book sales and create a feature posting on Tuesdays.  This brilliant idea came to me last week,  I amaze myself sometimes!  Funny thing is I have had zero book sales since last Tuesday.  Such is my world, I plan, I set up and then... Nothing!  Well here is hopping you have better luck than I.

For you book sellers that follow my blog, Could you?  Would you?  In a blog? Could you?  Would you?   In a link?  Could you?  Would you?  In a comment meant for me?  Share what books you like to flip?

Craigslist Sale, Ronco Showtime Rotisserie

Hard to admit but generally I shy away from listing items on craigslist.  The items have to be usually big and hard for me to ship before I take that plunge.  There have been just three sales there for me;  a playpen, a saxophone and today I sold a Showtime Rotisserie.  I bought it at a yard sale for $5,  you can read more about that here .  The thing was in almost new condition and I gave it a good once over for good measure.  The young woman who came with her friend to buy it could had not been more thrilled, at her luck.  I hope it serves them well.  There was a bit of haggling and well I accepted $40 cash for it, thats better than a sharp stick in the eye, Right?

What not to sell; Discolored Plastic

I'm gonna try my hardest to make WHAT NOT TO SELL a weekly blog feauture and hope many of you readers will add to it using the comments section.

Here is my first piece of advice of what not to sell;
I bought this here Vintage R. Dakin & Co. Dumbo figure at auction for $3.
As you can see he was hardly worth the effort to sell.
Auction brought in  just under $11.

The problem with Dumbo was the discoloration made him less than appealing.
So there learn from my mistakes, do not buy discolored plastic!

So this is Christmas

properly vintaged
Can it be Christmas all year round?  Why of course it can Jimmy!  See christmas comes from the heart...  Umm Ok Enough of that.  This post is really just about making sales year round on Christmas type items.  I just made a decent sale on a Vintage Riddell Santa Christmas Mug.  Im pretty sure I could had done better had I held on to it till the holidays were like right on top of us,  but well folks space here is at a premium so I have to turn around merchandise as soon as possible.  Not only that but sales are so slow that I have to throw everything I have at them.  Here is to hoping, the economy gets better!

Monday Thrift Finds

properly vintaged
Looky at what I found; Ronco Showtime ST4000 Rotisserie and Indoor BBQ Oven.  Found it at a block sale, when the young lady selling it asked for a mere $5 for it,  well I just about fell over.  The thing was practically brand new.

I can not tell you how many times I watched that informational and just salivated over this machine.  Set it and forget it you say? If I had one of those I would roast meat everyday of the week, I thought.   Let me just tell you....This here is NOT a fun item.  I misunderstood how involved a gadget such as this would be.  Oh my lord, it does roast an amazing chicken!  But the pull this, pop that, turn here, lock there... that is just not for me.  Off to the auction block with this one,  I'll keep my chicken in the old roasting pan.

So fast your head will spin!

properly vintaged cleencolla ebay amazon etsy
On a whim I went to my favorite thrift yesterday.  I don't usually leave the house on Thursdays but really needed a mental break from researching, cleaning, sorting, packing, photographing, listing.  You get the idea how time consuming this monster of a business can be.  Off to relax I went by doing what? that's right... securing more merchandise. Wow, I must be a glutton for punishment.

I found this incredibly cool looking puzzle there,Crazy Maze by TOMY. This baby is a monstrous maze of the 2D Ball kind, the thing is scary hard. I found it mint in the box and its from the 80's! THE 80's! I love the 80's. That time period is my passion and my obsession. OK back to the puzzle, I listed it as soon as I got home and I woke up this morning and it had already sold! Now that's smoking hot, folks.

Another profitable Little Golden Book,  and to think I never read any of these as a kid, how sad!  I bought this one at the thrift for one shiny quarter!

Did I ever tell you...

cleencolla properly vintaged etsy
That I sell on Etsy?  Well, I do.

I have a sister store there.  I have had it for about two years now,  somehow I don't show it the love and respect it rightfully deserves.  Etsy is very good to me.  I usually transition items from my eBay store to there.  I have to point out it takes longer to move items on Etsy, however I get my asking price 90% of the time.

eBay cant beat that!  I should start posting my Etsy sales here to share with you.

OK,  here goes the first one.  These Navajo earrings are like super hot (that was me channeling my daughter Kay),  I wore them a few times after scoring them at auction.  They got me the few compliments I needed to boost my ego.  Yet alas, like most of my jewelry...  I bore of them.   On to greener pastures for them, we said our finals and I listed them on Etsy.  They went for $35, which is about twice as much as I paid for them.

How Interesting...

properly vintaged ebay
I bought this shirt at thrift because I like soft things.

I enjoy luxurious feeling fabrics and believe it of not,  this polyester shirt actually feels like silk. Lush!  The shirt was bought for my own use.  I planned to make it unto a a short dress type thing that I could rock out with some leggings, very 80's... I know thats exactly what I was thinking!

However habit dictated that before I destroy a vintage garment, ahem... before I  "re-purpose" a vintage item, it must be checked-out on ebay.  With regrets I found the shirt is worth something to somebody.  Apparently these bowling shirts are very popular with the Mad Men crowd.  My dress will have to wait for another day.  I am happy to let the shirt go,  it is trutly awesome as it is.  Warms my heart that the lushness will go on and on.

I bought this book in light of a trip to New York City to see MOMA's installation of Burton's work.  My son is fascinated by his body of work, so for Manny's 9th Birthday I arranged to visit MOMA on a day Mr Burton would be there to autograph and chat with kids.

Sadly, when we arrived at NYC, Manny would not have it.  He preferred to go once more to the Natural History Museum, Imagine that!  This many years later, he laments having turned down a meeting of such momentous occasion and certainly so do I.

Monday Thrift Finds

cleencolla ebay
Oh, Wow!  It finally happened to me.  I had heard about this happening all over the thrift blogs.  However being a pessimist, well you know.
 "Behold Mates, I've struck GOLD"

My 1st stop on Saturday was a  humble one family yard sale.  It was just down the road for me so the drive was short.  First look there was not much there for resale.  However last week I had resolved to buy at least one token item at every single family sale I attend.   I rationalized that it is the polite thing to do.  Plus truth be told I feel sheepish when I look and don't buy.

There was a box full of watches that caught my eye,  I have a calling for watches.  I buy lots of them, some to gift, some to keep and some of course to sell.  I thought I saw a fine vintage watch there... then I looked again and the cheap vinyl band told me put it down.  The ugly band covered the back of the case and so I couldn't read any "Gold filled" markings,  which is what I thought the watch might be.

I ended up buying two watches and a vintage Etch n Sketch (for my boy).  Then I had a very pleasant conversation with the family.   As I was walking away,  the man there gifted me the watch I had put down, it was a lovely gesture.  Sunday I was getting my items ready for the shop.  I picked up the watch and thought again, "This is such a nice looking watch"  I had to peek in the back... there was nothing on the outside of the case.

But on the inside.....
OMG !

The watch is 14k GOLD.
Now for my moral dilemma...
Return the watch or sell and share the profit?

Say it with me, "Birkenstock"

ebay cleencolla
All comfort aside, Are these not the ugliest sandals ever created?  I read on one of the re-seller blogs to always buy these sandals at yard sales.  Apparently, there is a big cult of Birkin lovers out there who are constantly looking for their next fix.  We ebayers keep them well supplied.  I bought these at my local thrift for $1 and was amazed when they sold for $41.01  To each his own in regards to style,  and to all of us looking for profits...."Birkins all around!"

This Book I bought at a yard sale/fundraiser being held at my nephews elementary school, I paid two quarters as Damian would said.  I liked this book because it had "If"  a  poem which was highly recommended by a very wise man.  I bought the book and read the entire poem to my nephew.  He wasn't impressed but I was.
